Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999:

Every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of- the risks to the health and safety of this employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work.” (Regulation 3)

This includes work equipment. All risk assessments need to be carried out by a competent person, and recorded. Risk Assessments also require reviewing when conditions change as a result of the introduction of new machinery, process or hazards.
